Better Firefox for Ubuntu

I just created a simple Ubiquity Firefox script that enable Ubuntu user to search for Ubuntu related links easier. You  need to install Ubiquity from Mozilla lab. Ubiquity is a time-saving Firefox extension that simplifies common web activities by letting you give commands to Firefox. Ubiquity allow us to write our own command using javascript. Follow the Ubiquity tutorial so that you understand what Ubiquity all about. Once you have installed Ubiquity. Open up the Ubiquity command editor.

Copy paste the ‘Ubuntu’ ubiquity command that I wrote in Google Code. At the time of writing this blog my ubiquity script search for any ubuntu resources within Ubuntu Geek, How to Geek, Ubuntu Forum, and LaunchPad. You can easily add more search site by modifying the following line of code

...
 search({searchService: GOOGLE_SEARCH_BY_SITE, withinSite: "http://www.ubuntugeek.com ",siteTitle:"Ubuntu Geek", keyword: searchText,extraSearch:GOOGLE_WEB_SEARCH_BY_SITE},previewBlock);
 search({searchService: GOOGLE_SEARCH_BY_SITE, withinSite: "http://www.howtogeek.com ",siteTitle:"How To Geek", keyword: searchText,extraSearch:GOOGLE_WEB_SEARCH_BY_SITE},previewBlock);
 search({searchService: GOOGLE_SEARCH_BY_SITE, withinSite: "http://ubuntuforums.org/ ",siteTitle:"Ubuntu Forum", keyword: searchText,extraSearch:GOOGLE_WEB_SEARCH_BY_SITE},previewBlock);
 search({searchService: GOOGLE_SEARCH_BY_SITE, withinSite: "https://launchpad.net ",siteTitle:"Ubuntu LaunchPad", keyword: searchText,extraSearch:GOOGLE_WEB_SEARCH_BY_SITE},previewBlock);
 search({searchService: GOOGLE_SEARCH, withinSite: "",siteTitle:"General Search", keyword: searchText, extraSearch:GOOGLE_WEB_SEARCH},previewBlock);
 ...

Just add another search(..) and add your own the withinSite URL. This command will use google to search for keyword within the site URL that you supply.

This is screen capture show ‘Ubuntu’ command in action. Open your Ubiquity console (the default short cut key is ctrl + space).

So here I want to look for article on the web that has anything to do with ‘VLC Media Player’ for ubuntu. I simply type ‘Ubuntu VLC Media Player’ and Ubiquity will search for any matching article for VLC media player using Google.
